Tata Nano – World’s Cheapest Car

Submitted by Shawn on Monday, 23 March 20093 Comments

Today Tata Motors launched the Tata Nano for pre-orders in India.  The MSRP will be under $2,000.  Which makes this car the cheapest in the world.

The base model has no airbags, air conditioning, radio, or power steering.  You will be able to add these features to more luxurious versions of the Nano.  The base model does get over 50 mpg.

Tata Motors plans to sell a larger European version in 2011 and North American market later on.  Look for the price to be slightly higher as it ships to other markets.

If this car is a hit, they will certainly have a tough time keeping up with the demand.

Diversity, complexity and the necessity to supply and to meet the needs of world markets-today, come simplicity. Certainly there is strength in numbers.

When the Tata motors people raised a hue and cry over providing the common Indian a one lakh rupees car all were overwhelmed. The specifications and contents are fine. but what about the cost. They have not stuck to the cost of the car they have offered. i.e.
one lakh. Because it cannot be called a one lakh car any more. Going by the announcements in the dailies It may cost anywhere between 1.3 lakhs for the basic model upto 2 lakhs on road. they where is the tall cry of giving a one lakh car?

@Jayaraman – One lakh car was just a gimmick. It is like selling Amazon TVs for $499.99. But the point is that Tata promised a very basic car at a very low cost and it has been able to do that.
Although I personally wouldnt buy one because of the lack of basic safety features like air bags, it is still good for people who can afford this. (It might be $2000, but not many Indians can afford it and the the petrol that it needs). It is much safer way to travel than 4 to 6 people on a motorcyle or scooter. It is scary to see those circus like antics done on the road.
