Does business need more geeks?

BusinessPundit contends that business needs more “geeks”. I agree.
From BusinessPundit.com:
“Business used to be about providing value to the customer. Entrepreneurs captured a portion of that value creation as profit. The more value they created, the more profit they could make. But then along came Wall Street. Obsessed with quarterly profit increases and seeing them as disconnected from value creation, Wall Street encouraged businesses to think short-term. The things that led to value creation - things like innovation, continued learning, employee development, long-term focus - were replaced by pump-and-dump management styles.”
Why does business need a dose of “geekiness”?
* Geeks seek knowledge - just for fun.
* Geeks like to experiment - just for fun.
* Geeks openly debate the merits of technical ideas.
* Geeks are concerned with doing good work - just because.
* Geeks are about results, not office politics.

I think it is important to define what “geek” means in this context. It does not mean your IT department - it means people who are sometimes considered “geeks” because they have a super curious mind and are less interested in company politics.
In other words, if a geek is a person more concerned with substance than style, and combines that with a unending curiosity about the world around them. If this is the definition of a geek, then your company will need a few around - to be successful long term.
